Chapter 19
I felt my fury rising as I walked up to the lectern. I glared at Rafe Johnson. He avoided my gaze. I took a breath. Angry as I was, it wouldnât come off well with the jury.
âDetective Corning,â I started. âI just want to make a few things clear before we delve into the parts of your report Mr. Johnson conveniently forgot to ask you about.â So much for my plan to contain my rage.
âObjection!â Rafe was fuming. I could almost feel the heat coming off of him behind me. I refused to even turn to look at him.
âCounselor,â Judge Niedermayer said. âLetâs do better.â
I took another breath. âDetective Corning, regarding your analysis of Reed Karlâs cell phone ⦠all you can do is track where the phone was within a specific range at a specific time, isnât that right?â
âThatâs correct. We can triangulate its location based on which cell towers it pings.â
âYou know where the cell towerâs precise location is, not the phoneâs. Correct?â
âThatâs correct.â
âAnything else ⦠even the conclusion that Mr. Karlâs phone was at home or at his office ⦠thatâs an inference based on where the tower is, not the phone.â
âCorrect.â
âYou canât even be certain that Reed Karl was in possession of his phone during any of these readings you took, isnât that right?â
âIâm not sure what you mean.â
âOh, I think you are. But to be clear. Letâs take what you said about this pattern of movement during the last year. Itâs a pattern of movement regarding the phone. You canât say for sure whether Reed Karl was the one carrying the phone.â
âWell, no.â
âOkay. Iâm just trying to make sure we all understand the parameters of your analysis.â
âYes. Iâm tracking the movement of the cell phone. Thatâs all.â
âThank you. Now Iâm curious. You testified about text exchanges between the defendant and Ms. Lewis. But thatâs not the only data you were asked to analyze, right?â
âThat was one aspect of my analysis, yes.â
âBut you also were able to pull the camera rolls of both of those phones, right? Mr. Karlâs and Ms. Lewisâs.â
âOf course.â
âGreat. But Mr. Johnson didnât ask you about those photographs at all, did he?â
âNo.â
âRight. So now Iâd like to. Letâs talk about Mr. Karlâs cell phone first. Iâd like to direct your attention to whatâs been marked as Defense Exhibits Seven through Thirteen. Can you tell me what those are?â
Corning cleared his throat. âYes. Those are photographs retrieved from Reed Karlâs camera roll on his phone.â
âAnd are you able to determine when those photographs were taken?â
âTheyâre time stamped and geotagged. Yes.â
âGeotagged?â
âThe location where they were taken is part of the metadata we can look at.â
âAll right. When were they taken and where were they taken?â
âAll seven photographs were taken within three minutes of each other on May 29th of this year.â
âMay 29th. So a little more than a week before Megan Lewisâs death.â
âThatâs correct.â
âYour Honor,â I said. âIâd like to move for admission of Defense Exhibits Seven through Thirteen.â
âObjection, Your Honor, relevance.â
âAre you kidding?â I said.
